Body Shape Guide for Transgender & Non-Binary People

Most body shape guides assume a cisgender audience. This one doesn't. Whether you're trans femme, trans masc, non-binary, genderfluid, or anywhere on the gender spectrum, understanding your body measurements is a powerful tool for gender expression — and it belongs to you, not to a binary classification system.

Why Measurements Matter for Gender Expression

Your body measurements are neutral data. They don't define your gender. What they DO is help you:

  • Find clothes that fit the body you have while expressing the gender you are
  • Track changes during HRT (hormone replacement therapy) — fat redistribution is real and measurable
  • Set realistic training goals for the silhouette you want
  • Understand your proportions so you can style around them with intention

HRT and Body Measurements: What Changes

Estrogen-Based HRT (Trans Femme)

  • Fat redistribution begins around 3-6 months and continues for 2-5 years
  • Hip measurement typically increases as subcutaneous fat deposits shift
  • Waist-to-hip ratio trends toward a lower value
  • Bust measurement changes (breast development) with timing and genetics
  • Body type may shift from inverted triangle toward rectangle, hourglass, or pear

Testosterone-Based HRT (Trans Masc)

  • Fat redistribution away from hips and toward abdomen
  • Shoulder measurement may increase with muscle development
  • Waist measurement may increase as visceral fat patterns shift
  • Body type may shift toward rectangle or inverted triangle
  • Chest measurement may decrease (with or without top surgery)

Key measurement to track: Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is the most responsive metric to HRT fat redistribution. Measure every 3 months.

Measuring Tips for Gender-Affirming Accuracy

  • Chest/Bust: For trans femme individuals — measure at the fullest point, wearing whatever bra (or none) you normally wear. For trans masc individuals post-top surgery — measure at the natural chest line.
  • Waist: Use the same anatomical landmark regardless of gender. The narrowest point of your torso is objective.
  • Hips: Measure at the widest point of glutes. HRT significantly changes this number for trans femme people.
  • Shoulders: This measurement can be dysphoric for some. It's optional in our calculator. If measuring, focus on the data's usefulness for clothing fit, not its gendered associations.

Clothing Fit for Your Body + Your Gender

The secret that stylists know: it's not about finding "men's clothes" or "women's clothes" that fit. It's about finding clothes whose measurements match YOUR measurements, then styling them for your gender expression.

  • Trans Femme with broader shoulders: Look for women's clothing with stretch, raglan sleeves, or dolman cuts. Size up in tops and tailor the waist.
  • Trans Masc with wider hips: Men's athletic-cut pants have more hip room. Straight-leg and relaxed-fit trousers accommodate hips without clinging.
  • Non-binary styling: Mixing masc and femme silhouettes creates intentional gender expression. Knowing your measurements means you can shop both departments confidently.
